Update on discontinued Tokyopop titles, along with a list of titles ADV is allowing to go out of print.
Tokyopop’s cancelled list:
- Beyond the Beyond
- Blazin’ Barrels
- Kindaichi Case Files
- Lagoon Engine
- Nosatsu Junkie
These were supposed to have volumes released in January of ‘09, but these releases have been cancelled. Some of them have volumes scheduled for release before then, but after that they will be no more, and so are effectively dead. The only one I can see anyone being upset over is Kindaichi Case Files. I didn’t include any OEL “manga”.
On the ADV report…
- 5 Centimeters Per Second
- Best Student Council
- Innocent Venus
- Robotech
Are all going out of print. Innocent Venus was crap, so no one will care. Best Student Council will probably upset a few. But 5 cm is the one that is gonna make people upset. Then again, Funimation said it wasn’t gonna pick up ADV’s unpopular titles, but I don’t know if Sojitz/ARM was involved in any of these titles or not. Shinkai’s other ADV-held films (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days) also appear to be out of print, supporting the idea that these just weren’t popular. Assuming it would be popular is me just making the mistake that a lot of us more in-depth anime fans (so, not people just watching dubbed stuff on TV or only clutching after subs of Naruto) – that high-quality, thoughtful anime is well-liked and has a lot of fans. And therefore pushes units. Even though by now we really should know better.
Whatever. All I know is that I just bought a copy of 5 cm.
