Because nothing says “watch me!” quite like an SD loli-nun wielding a knife.
We meet Kamijou Kouma as he is fleeing from a group of delinquents; it seems that he came to the defense of a young lady who was being harassed by one of them, only to find that the remainder of the group was right behind him. However, all is not as it seems, as the girl he “saved” appears, and we realize that Kouma was trying to save the delinquents, not the girl. The girl then uses her mad psychic powers, and Kouma readies to block it.
The next day, Kouma wakes up in his overly hot apartment – the power went out because of the psychic girl, and all the food in his fridge has gone bad. When Kouma goes out on the balcony, he discovers an unconscious nun, who then wakes up and asks for food. Kouma gives her the spoiled food, which she happily eats, but then he feels guilty for giving her bad food and takes it away to eat, but it makes him sick.
The girl is Index, and she contains over one hundred thousand magic books within herself. As a result, she’s on the run from a magical society. Kouma disbelieves her, and demands proof of there being magic. Index tells him to stab her to demonstrate that her robes are magical and will defend her against anything. Kouma refuses, instead choosing to put his right hand on her shoulder – his right hand has the ability to dispel any supernatural attack. Index’s robes shred, and she must repair them using safety pins; however, it does prove that she is at least partially speaking the truth. As he’s leaving, Touma accidentally steps on his phone, and Index tells him that his hand is able to block anything because it is so unfortunate… but that this also means that Touma as a whole is very unfortunate, hence his clumsiness.
Kouma then leaves for supplementary lessons at school, and Index says bye, assuring him that she’ll be safe. At school, Kouma’s teacher is a loli, and one of his classmates is a masochistic loli-con. Good times.
After school, the psychic girl from before, Misaka Mikoto, confronts him and tries to start something. However, her electric attack confuses a few cleaning robots, who then pursue both Mikoto and Kouma. They manage to escape, and Kouma goes home.
In front of his door, though, Kouma discovers Index lying in a heap. At first he thinks she is asleep, but when he touches her, his hand comes back covered in blood. A man looms above him suddenly.
Impressions:
Loli nun? Loli teacher? Loli psychic? Hmm, smells like too many lolis…
However, I enjoyed this first episode – the fanservice quotient was shockingly low for a show involving so many loli characters, and I was reassured by this episode that it will not be going a harem-esque route, but instead will stick to action. Character interactions were also a high point of this episode, particularly in the case of Touma and Index.
Usually, light novel adaptations make me run (exceptions include Spice and Wolf and… uh… can’t think of any others off the top of my head…), but this seems to be off to a pretty good start. The end of the episode has me eagerly awaiting the second episode, given its cliffhanger nature, and also the fact that we got legit red blood – shock! Also, awesome, because black blood is so full of fail I can’t even measure it.
Touma wins by not being a total loser, and because his ‘power’ (if you can call it that) is fairly unique. Index wins by being cute and… uh… cute.
I’m knocking on wood that this remains as an action/comedy show, and avoids being a fanservice fest. I could also do with less of the teacher.

That was enough to get my attention actually.
