Darker than Disappointment

Yes, I know that the Darker than Black 2 and Fullmetal Alchemist 2 rumors have been denied.

But I had gotten excited about the Darker than Black rumor.

Darker than Black was a show I thoroughly enjoyed despite its shortcomings (one of which, unfortunately, was its ending). I felt it had some very strong characters, particularly in the case of Misaki, the police chief – she totally kicked ass. But it left a lot of things unanswered, and the OVA was severely disappointing on that point, having turned out to be a “humorous” side-story from about halfway through the TV series.

On the topic of characters, though, I feel that BONES has brought us some very interesting characters in its original shows. Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi, although suffering from poor pacing in its first half, had some very engaging characters that fell outside of the norm, especially the male lead, Yuki, who was a low-class 39-year old with some serious flaws. Also, this show has probably had my favorite foreign character ever in Atl, the Mexican circus performer – seriously, how often does anime have non-American foreign characters? And how many shows set in the mid-1800’s in Japan feature foreigners period? It really is too bad the pacing was so bad on this show – it scared so many viewers off, but I stuck with it through the whole run, and it definitely not only got better, but developed a TON of potential that was, sadly, squandered by its cancelation. At least it got a good set of OVA’s, unlike Darker than Black.

Anyway, while I know Ayakashi Ayashi has no chance of a sequel TV series, I felt that Darker than Black did have the possibility, so I got a little bit excited at the prospect of it when it came through on the intertubes that there supposedly was one on the works. I don’t even care if it’s only 13-episodes long, I would’ve been happy nonetheless, so long as it actually answered questions this time around rather than producing them at an exponential rate like the first time around.

Actually, considering Ayakashi Ayashi (or, as the US release has been deemed, ‘Ayashi Ghost Slayers’, which actually isn’t too bad of a re-name), it would seem that BONES has trouble pacing their original works. Sort of. A lot of people weren’t crazy about the two-episodes per story approach that Darker than Black took, and I would agree that in some of the cases it didn’t suit the story too well (although when it did work, it was VERY good).

Anyway, I guess this was just my roundabout way of saying ‘Bummer about Darker than Black 2’, although the president of BONES hasn’t completely ruled it out for the future… although I don’t think Japanese studios will ever definitively say that something won’t be getting a sequel.

Damn, I knew the news was “too good to be true” when it first came out, but bummer indeed about there no being DtB 2… for now.

*sigh* I was really really excited too >____>

I really wanted to know what happened to Hei and Misaki…

Hei x Misaki all the way

I don’t like Darker than Black

  5. I have to say I quite liked the ending of DtB, because of its unresolvedness, and in any case a direct sequel wouldn’t have had November 11 in it. I would have been quite happy with a sequel or perhaps an OVA set in the same world, though.

LOL at the title XD How fitting. (:

@ shriokiryuu – Personally, I really want to know what was actually up with Bai… we never really do learn what happened to her, after all.

@ The Animanachronism – November 11 was so fucking cool… his death scene really kicked ass, although I was a bit bummed since he was awesome. At least he wasn’t like the other ones who died toward the end, though, since it seemed like in the last two or so episodes that they were just throwing people at a blender to help resolve things a little.
