Favorite Anime ED’s, Part Three

I had two choices for this evening’s post…

Either I was going to go ass-hat like last night, or I was going to do something less potentially taxing and just continue my list of favorite anime ED’s. I chose the second – its hot, its humid, and I just ran three miles anyway and still have to pull all the tape off my legs, so I’m not exactly in the energetic, exuberant blogger mood.

Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei

Although I haven’t really given much thought to the order of favoritest in the universe ED to not top favoritest ED in the universe but still up there, our favorite show of despair does probably happen to have one of my top favorites of ED. Part of this is due to the fact that that nut Akiyuki Shinbo helmed SZS, as is evident by the creative and eye-catching visuals, part of this is due to the fact that I have a weird hang-up/love for silouetted figures that nevertheless have non-silouetted clothing (see: Revolutionary Girl Utena, Ouran High Host Club). But I also really love Zessei Bijin, the music that accompanies the animation, primarily because it is so thoroughly different from most anime music (the only recent exception I can think of was Ghost Hound’s OP). It certainly doesn’t hurt that it is sung by a very talented bunch of ladies. I also find far too much amusement in the fact that the girl shown with the kimono slipping off her shoulders looked like she janked it from Enma Ai.

Shin Tenchi Muyo ED

Shin Tenchi Muyo sucked. But its hard to go wrong with the ED – entitled ‘Yamerarenai, Yamerarenai’ (which can translate to either ‘Unstoppable, Unstoppable’ or ‘I Just Can’t Stop, I Just Can’t Stop’), the music sounds like it was composed by someone from backwoods Appalachia (for the record, I go to school in Appalachia) and has great lines like “I just can’t stop, I just can’t stop bathing naked outside.” Which is to say that this is, basically, crack. If you’re not grinning like a moron at the absurdity by the end of it, there might be something wrong with you.

Strawberry Panic ED 1

Also, I can’t help but like the fact that Mai Nakahara and Ai Shimizu’s voices sound kind of creepy… ok actually, there are about two hundred flavors of creepy in this video, including the dead-eyed look Ai and Mai have while lying down together and singing. This is the PV, actually, but that was just an extended cut of the ED itself, and I couldn’t find any videos that were only the ED =( Other amusing point about the ED: these ladies were the voice actors for Nagisa and Tamao – take that Shizuma! Also: Ai Shimizu is pretty cute with braids; why did I not know this before?

Toradora! ED 2

Cheesey? Yes. Awesome? Definitely. I probably actually like the song ‘Orange’ a bit too much, although one of the reasons for that is the fact that it made me realize that Eri Kitamura has an absolutely lovely voice. I enjoy the softer art used for the ED, too, along with the relative sparseness of the animation and art – it looks clean and it has a warm feeling to it. Of course, its always also fun to see the fact that Ryuuji would be a fucking amazing husband on display. The shot of the cake at the end makes me really want to go out and eat one of those; it looks delicious.

Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi ED 1

I think that the visuals of TIAA’s first ED, ‘Winding Road’, are phenomenal – a true case of art over action with fantastic results. There is little movement in the ED, but when it does occur, BONES really shows off its skills at fluid animating techniques; this is particularly obvious with the orange and red dominated shot of swimming fish. Its a toss up between whether I like that particular shot best or the one with the different sword hilts, which goes to show that you don’t need to continually toss the animation flair constantly to have a beautiful moment. I also like Porno Graffiti’s ‘Winding Road’, even if it is a bit on the heavy side of mournfulness – in particular, I like the line about a lonely umbrella, as it is fairly evocative.

Was surprised to see “Yamerarenai, Yamerarenai” here, but I’m glad to see someone else likes it too. I also think it’s all kinds of awesome when characters’ voice actors all join together for a good song.

I never really liked any of the SZS EDS. The wacky OPs were where the magic was at. Likewise with Strawberry Panic. I wants mah naked Nagisa, Tamao and the other forgettable girl holding hands plz. Though I ended up not liking Toradora, it did have some good OP/EDs and Orange is no exception.
